Making A Difference

The IRA Charitable Rollover and Other Year-End Planning News

The Senate acted to extend the IRA Charitable Rollover through 2014 by passing H.R. 5771. The bill was signed by President Obama on December 19, 2014.

The extension allows individuals age 70½ or older to transfer up to $100,000 from their IRAs to qualified public charities free of federal income tax. The transfer also qualifies for a donor’s 2014 required minimum distribution (RMD).

The bill extends this opportunity only through the end of 2014. No relief was afforded in the form of an extended period of time to make a gift in 2015 that applies to the 2014 tax year. Individuals who want to make a charitable rollover should contact their advisors and IRA administrators immediately to assess their options.
